MEMPHIS, TN March 3, 2023 – Today Sharp Manufacturing Company of America, a division of Sharp Electronics Corporation (“SMCA”) announced exciting news regarding its ongoing sponsorship of Team 5045, a student-led robotics team based out of White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee near SMCA’s manufacturing facility.

Last week, SMCA executives Satyajit Chaubal, Sr. Vice President; Ken Brandt, Associate Vice President, Engineering; Karin Tanaka, Sr. Director, Human Resources; Derek Shannon, Associate Department Manager, Engineering, and Noel Clark, Sr. Buyer, Procurement visited White Station High School to present a monetary donation to Team 5045 to be used towards the continued growth of the team, including robotics production costs and competition travel needs.

“We are so thrilled to continue supporting Team 5045 and the students who are working hard to prepare for not only their next competition, but their future in STEM” said Satyajit Chaubal, Sr. Vice President, SMCA. “This is such an exciting sponsorship for Sharp and we enjoy being able to assist the team with their robotics endeavors and career goals.”

Part of the donation will help Team 5045 prepare to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition, an international competition that uses competitive robotics as a vehicle for promoting science and technology. Team 5045 is dedicated to helping its surrounding community by introducing STEM education to students in Memphis and fostering the growth of the next generation of STEM workers.

SMCA has been supporting Team 5045 in several different ways over the course of six years. Team 5045 has demonstrated their robots/activities to Sharp employees, and Sharp has provided exposure to its manufacturing setting through tours, as well as supplying the students with meeting space for competition kickoffs. SMCA has also directly supported the team by machining custom parts for their robots. Since the beginning of the relationship, Sharp has also hosted two Team 5045 alumni as summer interns.

SMCA looks forward to continuing its support of Team 5045 and providing opportunities to young individuals interested in pursuing a career in STEM.
